Repetition Creates Recognition

One of the most valuable lessons I learned from my college basketball coach was this: repetition creates recognition. That principle doesn’t just apply to basketball; it’s a cornerstone of improvement in any walk of life, including pickleball. If you were one of our participants in the Rockport Pickleball Winter Workshop, you’ve already taken an important step toward improving your game. Now, it’s time to make the most of the time, energy, and money you invested. Here are some actionable next steps we learned from our instructor Dr Rommie Maxey, along a continuum of increasing return on your investment:

1. Write It Down

Like Rommie said, take a few minutes to write down the key takeaways from the workshop or any learning experience we might have. What did you learn? What techniques or strategies resonated with you? Writing things down helps solidify them in our memory, ensuring that when you hit the court next, you’ll remember what you worked on and can start applying it immediately.

2. Watch and Learn

Search for YouTube videos on the topics you wrote down. This is one of my favorite ways to learn about a lot of subjects! There are countless resources available, many of which provide excellent visual demonstrations of the skills we’re all trying to improve. Watching videos can reinforce what you learned in the workshop and provide additional perspectives to enhance our understanding.

3. Focus on One Thing

When you’re out playing, choose one skill or technique to work on each time you’re on the court. Be intentional about improving that one thing and don’t worry about who’s winning or losing. For example, if you’re focusing on your return of serve, make every effort to return deep into your opponent’s court consistently, regardless of the game’s outcome. Improvement is the goal.

4. Practice with a Group

This is where repetition really begins to take hold. Find or create a skills and drills group dedicated to practicing specific elements of the game. If you’re in the area, consider joining the many training groups we offer at Corpus Christi Athletic Club . Or, better yet, start a drills and skills group where you play!!!

5. Take Lessons

For targeted improvement, private or semi-private lessons (with 2 to 4 players) are invaluable. In a structured lesson, you’ll practice specific skills more times in a single session than you likely would in a month of recreational play. The focused attention and expert guidance will accelerate your progress.

Bottom Line: Do Something!

The key to improvement is action. Whether it’s writing down what you learned, watching videos, practicing with a group, or taking lessons, taking a step—any step—is the most important thing. You’ll not only see the results on the court, but you’ll also feel the joy and satisfaction of knowing you’re getting better every day.

Repetition creates recognition, and recognition leads to improvement. So take that next step, and let’s see the progress you’ll make. See you on the court!

See you on the courts …

NOTE: As a coach and instructor, I’m passionate about helping players grow and improve. But I get it—coaching is a lot like finding the perfect glove; sometimes, it’s all about the right fit. If I’m not your style, that’s totally okay! What matters most is that you’re taking action to get better. In fact, if I hear you’ve connected with another coach or instructor, I’ll be thrilled to know you’re investing in your game and your growth. Keep chasing those goals—your progress is what matters most!
